本片描写了一起于1944年发生在纽约曼哈顿河畔公园的凶杀案，当时19岁的哥伦比亚大学生卢西安·卡尔用刀杀害了同性恋者大卫·卡莫埃尔，其好友——“垮掉的一代”代表性人物——杰克·凯鲁亚克和同性恋诗人艾伦·金斯堡因此事受牵连。由于该起案件中的恐同色彩，艾伦·金斯堡以此事件为题材发表了著名的诗作《Kill Your Darlings》，也就是这部新片片名的来源。
